Although the Cape has dominated as a semigration destination, the trend is slowing down as the Cape’s high property and living costs turn the tide.

“Prolific semigration created both opportunities and challenges for local municipalities in the Cape. The positive aspects included economic growth, increased property values, cultural diversity and often, improved service delivery as the tax base increased.”

“It is a balancing act for municipalities as semigration can also create infrastructure strain, housing shortages, a higher demand for services, and accentuate social disparages. And where money goes, crime soon follows”.

Unfortunately, the dream of a better life on the coast did not work out for all. But for those who can absorb the higher prices or still enjoy working remotely, it remains an attractive option. And municipalities have become more resilient, while growing their strategic, urban planning and infrastructure planning skills.
