President Ramaphosa has made bridging the gap between the public and private sectors a key element of his economic strategy which aims to promote a mixed economy where a ‘capable developmental state’ partners with a ‘dynamic and agile’ private sector. Mubesko is well-positioned to play a role in this transition.
Mubesko MD Nico de Kock discusses just two areas where Mubesko can help.
Culture.
The public sector is built primarily on governance, legislation and service delivery whereas the private sector is driven by competitiveness, operational efficiency and profit. Respect for each other’s differences is important otherwise frustration can creep in. Municipalities known for clean governance, ethical leadership and good credit ratings are already pursuing visionary projects with the private sector, and one cannot allow frustration or misunderstanding to slow momentum. Ultimately, both sectors are reliant on effective service delivery and should see each other as partners. Understanding and respecting each other’s objectives and challenges is essential.
Competitiveness.
With service delivery scarce in many areas, attracting investors and new residents to boost economic growth and revenue is extremely competitive. As an example of a competitive public-private partnership: when a municipality seeks to grow by attracting new residents, the private sector can source investors and funders to support infrastructural development.
These are just two examples of a more collaborative private – public sector partnership and, with a foot in each, Mubesko can bridge the gap.
